New Associate: Shane Varjassy Joins Bow River Law

Bow River Law welcomes Shane Varjassy as an associate at the firm’s Calgary office. Varjassy practices in civil litigation with a focus on employment law, labour law, and human rights.

Prior to joining Bow River Law, he articled with a boutique firm in Saskatoon and later worked as a litigation associate, representing clients before civil provincial courts, the Federal Court of Canada, a range of administrative tribunals, and in alternative dispute resolution settings.

During law school, Varjassy volunteered with a legal clinic that provided legal services to marginalized individuals in Saskatoon.

Varjassy’s legal background includes work in both employment and civil litigation. His client focused approach supports Bow River Law’s commitment to clear communication, practical advice, and strategic advocacy. Varjassy will be working closely with the firm's leadership team as he expands his practice in employment and labour law.

Leadership Recognition: Joel Fairbrother Appointed Chair of the CBA Employment Law (South) Section

Co-Founding partner Joel Fairbrother has recently been appointed Chair of the Canadian Bar Association Alberta Employment Law (South) Section. In this role, he will be contributing to the coordination of educational sessions, professional development initiatives, and collaborative opportunities for employment lawyers across southern Alberta.

Fairbrother’s appointment reflects his ongoing efforts to support the advancement of employment and labour law practice in the province. His work with the CBA includes fostering discussion on emerging legal issues, legislative developments, and best practices that impact both employees and employers.

Thought Leadership: Joel Fairbrother Receives Mondaq Thought Leadership Award

Bow River Law is also proud to recognize that Fairbrother has been awarded the Mondaq Thought Leadership Award for Employment and Human Resources. This award highlights practitioners whose published insights demonstrate depth of expertise and sustained value to readers across the legal and business community.

Fairbrother’s contributions on employment law topics have been widely read in Canada and internationally. Mondaq’s award program identifies authors whose commentary ranks among the most engaged content in its database. Recent articles written by Fairbrother have addressed evolving workplace standards, termination issues, and trends affecting Alberta workers and organizations.

"We are pleased to share these updates as our firm continues to grow and contribute to the employment law community.” Notes Fairbrother, “Shane’s arrival strengthens our capacity to support clients through a wide range of workplace disputes, and I am honoured by the opportunities provided through the CBA and by the recognition from Mondaq.
