Drawing on her experience inside law firms, Silverglade emphasizes that much of what consumes staff time each day is not legal work, but repetitive administrative behavior that can be automated reliably: “The most valuable work in a law firm is the human work, such as building relationships, exercising judgment, and delivering guidance,” Silverglade explained. “The rest is essential, but many tasks don’t need a human doing it all day long.” She emphasizes that software “bots” can replicate exact human actions, such as logging into systems, moving data between platforms, generating documents, and filing cases—without variability or fatigue.

Silverglade highlights why law firms should carefully distinguish between automation and artificial intelligence when investing in technology. “Automation is rules-based and predictable,” she noted. “Once it’s tested and deployed, it executes the same way every time, which is why we can reach near 100% accuracy.” In contrast, she cautions that many AI tools still require significant oversight, reducing net time savings for firms that must constantly review AI-generated output.

Silverglade shares success stories from firms that implemented just one or two automations and saw immediate benefits, from estate planning practices dramatically reducing document prep time to personal injury firms saving entire days each week on medical record retrieval. “We’ve seen teams get their evenings and weekends back,” Silverglade said. “That changes everything for productivity, morale, and retention.”

When approaching change management, Silverglade explains that successful automation initiatives depend on how firm leadership communicates with staff. “People are afraid automation means losing their job,” she said. “But when teams understand that automation removes the paperwork they hate, they actually embrace it.” By involving staff early and focusing on how automation elevates their roles, firms can improve adoption while reducing resistance.
