New Workflow Simplifies Performance-Based Ventilation Design Under ASHRAE Standard 62.1 and embeds IAQP calculations directly within HVAKR's mechanical engineering platform, helping engineers design with flexibility, work faster and prove value with transparent performance comparisons
ITASCA, Ill., Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Fellowes, a leading provider of commercial air quality management systems, and HVAKR, a cloud-based mechanical engineering platform, today announced an integrated solution that simplifies application of the Indoor Air Quality Procedure within ASHRAE Standard 62.1. The solution combines a new IAQP capability within HVAKR's existing engineering workspace with Fellowes IAQP-Ready Array air purification devices and a specifically tested IAQP-Ready filter, giving engineers a more streamlined way to evaluate, document and specify performance-based ventilation designs.
"By collaborating with HVAKR, we've made IAQP a practical part of the normal design process, helping engineers evaluate potential air quality, energy and system optimization benefits without adding to their workload." – Jason Jones, Director of Air Quality Management, Fellowes
Developed through a strategic partnership between the two organizations, the application embeds IAQP calculations directly within HVAKR's cloud-based mechanical engineering platform, turning what has historically been a complex process into a more practical everyday workflow. The platform gives project teams a way to evaluate compliance options, energy impacts, HVAC sizing considerations and documentation requirements earlier in design, when decisions can have the greatest effect on building performance and project cost.
Today's engineers face increasing pressure to meet code requirements while improving occupant health, reducing energy use, supporting decarbonization goals and controlling project budgets. Although IAQP has been part of ASHRAE Standard 62.1 for decades, adoption has remained limited because the calculations, documentation and approval process can be difficult to navigate within traditional design workflows.
The enhancement removes those barriers by making IAQP evaluation more accessible and defensible. Engineers can generate supporting documentation and demonstrate how a performance-based design supports code compliance and defined building-performance objectives.
Fellowes is also introducing IAQP-Ready Array air purification devices. Configured with an IAQP-Ready filter that is efficiency-rated according to ASHRAE 52.2 and ASHRAE 145.2, the solution provides verified performance data that can be used to evaluate contaminant-removal effectiveness as part of an IAQP design. Within HVAKR, engineers can use this data to evaluate application requirements, document projected performance, and specify the appropriate Fellowes Array solution within the broader HVAC design.
HVAKR's innovative platform gives engineers direct access to trusted engineering and IAQ data within the design environment. Teams can start projects from scratch, templates, AI-generated models or uploaded floor plans; design complete HVAC and IAQ solutions with integrated product selection and placement; and validate designs in 3D to improve accuracy and coordination. For designs incorporating Fellowes Array® the IAQP-Ready capability supports a more streamlined path for evaluating contaminant control, ventilation reduction opportunities and ASHRAE Standard 62.1 compliance.
The new workflow also helps engineering teams work faster by automating space takeoffs, IAQ zoning and other time-consuming design tasks; accelerating system design with intelligent placement of HVAC equipment and air-cleaning solutions; reducing rework through a continuously updated model; and exporting project documentation and drawings with just a few clicks.
"The future of building design isn't about choosing between performance, sustainability, and human well-being. It's about achieving all three," said John Fellowes, CEO of Fellowes. "As energy costs rise and expectations for healthier, more sustainable spaces continue to grow, our industry has an opportunity to rethink what's possible. IAQP is part of that future, empowering engineers to design buildings that work better for people, businesses, and the planet. At Fellowes, we are proud to be helping lead that transformation and inspired by the impact these innovations can have for generations to come, unlocking new possibilities for how buildings serve people and communities."
HVAC systems account for approximately 39% of a building's total energy use, with a significant portion dedicated to conditioning outdoor air required under traditional ventilation strategies. By helping engineers evaluate IAQP and VRP strategies with instant performance comparisons, the application can identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary outdoor air, optimize HVAC system sizing and measure energy savings, and estimate payback and ROI as designs evolve. The platform also helps create professional documentation and reports with the data needed to support approval and communicate recommendations using transparent, quantifiable results.
"The challenge was never whether IAQP could deliver value. The challenge was making it practical for engineers to evaluate within the realities of project schedules and design deadlines," said Jason Jones, Director of Air Quality Management at Fellowes. "Our objective was to remove that barrier. By collaborating with HVAKR, we've made it easier for engineers to consider IAQP as part of a normal design evaluation rather than a separate exercise. Engineers can now discover the potential air quality, energy, and system optimization benefits of IAQP without taking on additional workload."
By connecting verified Array product-performance data with the HVAKR design environment, the solution streamlines IAQP evaluation, documentation and specification within one engineering workflow.
"As an engineer, I've experienced firsthand the limitations of traditional design workflows, where critical analyses are spread across multiple tools, spreadsheets, and disconnected processes," said Davis Muxlow, Co-Founder and COO of HVAKR. "HVAKR's cloud-based, AI-native mechanical engineering workspace was built to help engineers design HVAC systems faster while retaining full engineering control, transparency, and technical sophistication. Our partnership with Fellowes brings IAQP directly into that workflow, allowing engineers to discover, evaluate, and implement performance-based ventilation strategies without switching between multiple applications. The result is a more intuitive design experience that reduces manual effort, accelerates decision-making, and delivers transparent, quantifiable outcomes without compromising design quality."
The IAQP capability is available beginning today through the HVAKR platform. Engineers can use it to evaluate and specify Fellowes IAQP-Ready Array solutions as part of the HVAC design process.
