Harold Toliver's “Mythic Worlds and the One You Can Believe In” will be among the works presented by The Maple Staple at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2026. Combining philosophy, science, and literature, “Mythic Worlds and the One You Can Believe In” examines how long-standing misconceptions about world history have continued to influence societies and contribute to international tensions. At the center of the book is the natural continuum, currently understood to extend across approximately 13.8 billion years, which Toliver uses as a framework for reconsidering traditional assumptions about history, belief, and humanity's place in the world.
The book explores how some literary and philosophical traditions have struggled to accommodate beliefs with what modern natural history has established. Toliver also considers how beliefs that conflict with natural history can contribute to nationalism and support extremist movements, presenting the natural continuum as a basis for questioning these durable misconceptions.
Toliver approaches these questions from a background in English and comparative literature. His earlier work focused largely on literary criticism and history, while his more recent publications have examined how developments in natural history transformed the history of ideas. His studies trace this shift from the Renaissance contributions of Copernicus and Galileo and the work of Francis Bacon through major developments in physics, astrophysics, astronomy, geology, evolutionary biology, and anthropology during the 1920s.
Through this interdisciplinary work, Toliver evaluates traditional assumptions found in literature, philosophy, and broader cultural beliefs about the planet and its inhabitants.
