The renowned explorer and son of Sir Edmund Hillary will share a lifetime of adventure with guests on intimate expeditions through Alaska and Antarctica in 2027
NEW YORK, Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions today announced renowned mountaineer and philanthropist, Peter Hillary, will join select Alaska and Antarctica expeditions in May and December 2027, offering guests the rare opportunity to travel alongside an explorer whose life has been shaped by some of the planet's most extraordinary places. A returning guest of National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, Hillary will share stories and lessons from a lifetime of exploration through dedicated onboard conversations, while becoming part of the expedition itself — dining with guests, exploring alongside them and sharing the spontaneous conversations and discoveries that unfold over the course of a journey.
The son of legendary mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, who alongside Tenzing Norgay made the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, Peter Hillary has spent his life following his own call to explore. He has participated in more than 50 mountaineering expeditions, including five on Mount Everest, completed the Seven Summits and skied to the South Pole in Antarctica. His adventures also took him on a 5,000-kilometer, 10-month high-altitude traverse of the Himalayas and an aviation expedition to the North Pole alongside his father and Neil Armstrong.
"Peter has been a longtime friend of Lindblad, and we are delighted to welcome him back on board," said Natalya Leahy, CEO of Lindblad Expeditions. "One of the things that makes a National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions journey so special is the influential voices we bring into the experience — people whose lives, knowledge and perspectives deepen the way our guests see the places they explore. Peter embodies that beautifully. His extraordinary life of exploration, and the legacy of the Hillary family, will add an incredibly meaningful dimension to these journeys."
Highlights of Peter Hillary's upcoming engagements include:
- Alaska's Inside Passage and Hubbard Glacier — May 2027
Explore the wild beauty of Southeast Alaska, from secluded coves and mist-filled fjords to the lush temperate rainforest, with opportunities to see brown bears and bald eagles before reaching the towering Hubbard Glacier. - Alaska's Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and Prince Rupert — May 2027
Travel through the glacier-carved landscapes of Alaska and British Columbia, exploring fjords, wildlife-rich waters and communities shaped by deep connections to culture and nature. - Antarctica Direct: Sail and Fly the Drake Passage — December 2027
Experience the wild landscapes of Antarctica aboard National Geographic Explorer, sailing the Drake Passage one way and flying back across it. Explore channels and coves framed by towering peaks, with opportunities to see whales and icebergs and explore by Zodiac, kayak and on foot.
For Hillary, exploration has been a lifelong pursuit shaped by both personal experience and a family legacy. His 2002 Everest expedition was featured in the National Geographic documentary Everest: 50 Years on the Mountain, which marked the 50th anniversary of his father's historic ascent. He has also appeared in National Geographic films focused on Everest, Antarctica, and polar exploration. The Hillary family's enduring mountaineering legacy continues to resonate globally with the October 2026 release of Tenzing, a new feature film chronicling the life and accomplishments of Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary.
"The spirit of discovery is something that has shaped my life, from the mountains of the Himalayas to the polar regions," said Peter Hillary. "I look forward to sharing some of those experiences with guests and hearing about their own connections to, and passions for, exploration as we travel together."
Beyond mountaineering, Hillary has continued his family's philanthropic work in Nepal. He is the chairperson of the Himalayan Trust, which provides education, health, and environmental services for people in the Mount Everest region through programs developed at the request of, and in cooperation with, local communities.
Hillary's engagement continues a longstanding connection between the Hillary family and National Geographic. As guests explore Alaska and Antarctica, they will have the opportunity to hear firsthand from one of the world's most renowned explorers, bringing a new perspective to the spirit of discovery that connects generations of explorers together.
